Tool & Die Maker

Job Summary:

The Tool & Die Maker position plays an important role in the development and certification efforts of DeltaHawk Engines. Under the supervision of the Test Manager, the Tool & Die Maker position will have a diverse role providing support for designing, fabricating, machining, and assembling test fixtures and prototype engine parts. This role will be starting a new department within test engineering; a successful candidate will be able to specify and support installation and commissioning of new machining equipment. In addition, this individual will provide support in one or more areas including Sheetmetal and/or welding.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Fabrication of test equipment, holding fixtures, and test facility infrastructure in support of the engineering and test departments
  • Occasional support and/or training for the production environment
  • Modification of existing or new components as required to meet engineering specified test needs
  • Machining of components required for larger fabrication assemblies
  • Communication (verbal or written) of project status to engineering and leadership

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience programming, setup (including tooling), and operating CNC mills and lathes in a non-production R&D environment
  • Past experience machining aluminum, steel, stainless, and plastics using manual mills, lathes, saws and grinders
  • Ability to choose or design proper work-holding/fixturing, tooling, feeds/speeds, and tool paths of machining operations
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and tolerances (GD&T) as well as measure critical dimensions
  • Knowledge of the mechanical properties of various metals and common plastics
  • Attention to detail in all tasks including troubleshooting assemblies as well as final assembly and fitting work
  • Passionate about learning and a strong “can do” attitude
  • Ability to lift, hold, and position weights up to 45 lbs. intermittently (two to four times per hour over a work shift) as well as work in various positions as needed for typical fabrication tasks

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and desire to mentor and develop new and/or junior employees in areas of expertise
  • Ability to create drawings as needed to document projects using tools such as SolidWorks
  • Experience creating detailed weldments and/or fixtures (e.g. for roll cages, race car frames, aerospace engine mounts, etc.)
  • Ability to use sheet metal tools such as brakes, shears, rollers, and cutters

Working Conditions:

Work will be conducted in a mechanical shop and engine test cell environment with standard precautions required consistent with welding, fabrication, assembly and test environments.
