Metal Craftsman

Job Summary:

The Metal Craftsman plays an important role in the development and certification efforts of DeltaHawk Engines.  Under the supervision of the Test Manager, this position will have a diverse role providing support for designing, fabricating, and assembling test fixtures and test facility infrastructure.  In addition, the Metal Craftsman will provide support in one or more areas including machining and testing support.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Fabrication of test equipment, holding fixtures, and test facility infrastructure in support of the engineering and test departments.
  • Modification of existing or new components as required to meet engineering specified test needs.
  • Machining of components required for larger fabrication assemblies.
  • Communication (verbal or written) of project status to engineering and leadership.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in in the areas of welding, machining, and sheet metal work combined.

Machining:

  • Experience machining aluminum, steel, stainless, and plastics using manual or semi-automated mills, lathes, saws and grinders.

Welding:

  • Welding experience using TIG on aluminum as well as thin stainless plate and tubing.
  • Experience creating detailed weldments as well as holding fixtures for same (e.g. roll cages, race car frames, aerospace engine mounts, etc.).

Sheet metal:

  • Design, create, repair and installation for test fixtures and test infrastructure.
  • Ability to read prints and use sheet metal tools such as brakes, shears, rollers, and cutters.
  • Excellent attention to detail in all metal fabrication tasks including reading and interpreting drawing intent, troubleshooting assemblies as well as final assembly work.
  • Passionate about learning and a strong “can do” attitude.
  • Ability to lift, hold, and position weights up to 45 lbs. intermittently (two to four times per hour over a work shift) as well as work in various positions as needed for typical fabrication tasks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and desire to mentor and develop new and/or junior employees in areas of expertise.

Machining:

  • Experience programming and operating CNC mills and lathes in a non-production R&D environment.

Welding:

  • Experience with other materials such as 4130, Inconel, stainless, or steel.
  • Experience with other welding processes such as MIG and stick.

Sheet metal:

  • Experience with sheet metal forming such as floor pans, bracketing, or tanks.
  • Ability to create digital or paper drawings as needed to document fabrication projects.
  • Facility maintenance background including electrical troubleshooting, plumbing modifications and general construction techniques.

Working Conditions:

Work will be conducted in a mechanical shop and engine test cell environment with standard precautions required consistent with welding, fabrication, assembly and test environments.
